How to avoid bottled water on travels

How to avoid bottled water on travels

Whenever we are near the ocean, we are reminded of the effects plastics are having on our Earth. but you don’t need to be near the sea to start making better choices, there’s a clear winner: Reusable > Disposable EVERY TIME.

People ask us how we avoid buying bottled water while traveling. And the truth is it is easier in some countries than it is in others. But there are almost always options. In Thailand, you can find water refill stations on the street that charge you a few cents to fill up your bottles. In Mexico City, safe drinking fountains have been installed in all the metro stations. In Guatemala, many of our hostels had carbon filters we could refill with. And on this tiny island in Honduras we are staying on right now, you will find jugs sterilized water everywhere.

And when all else fails, we use our Steripen to clean our water. Yep, that means we fill up the tap and use the mini light-saber-looking-device to zap all the bad things in the water. The Steripen has a UV light, which is basically the same process they use at many water treatment plants. We have used it all around the world to clean our water — from Mexico to India to Thailand to Peru to stream all over the USA.

And when it comes to a water bottle, the brand does not matter (though we LOVE our Hydroflask bottles because they keep our water icy cold — a serious luxury during a hike or on a beach day!) The thing that matters is that you are making a choice to better this earth. Invest in one you like. Carry it with you everywhere. And start saying “no” when you are offered plastic (I am still working on this).

How do you avoid single use plastic while traveling or in your everyday life? We try our best, but like always say, we are far from perfect. We are still learning and working on ways to reduce our impact. We would love to hear your tips too!
